Hematology Oncology Fellowship

Program Details

Years 1 and 2

The first two years of fellowship training consist primarily of clinical rotations, the majority of which take place in outpatient settings. Core rotations include the following: 

  • Leukemia
  • Lymphoma
  • Plasma Cell Dyscrasias
  • Stem Cell Transplantation and Cellular Therapy 
  • Gastrointestinal and Thoracic Oncology
  • Breast, Gynecologic, and Head and Neck Oncology
  • Melanoma, Sarcoma, and Neurologic Oncology
  • Phase I Therapeutics
  • Palliative Care
  • Inpatient Benign Hematology Consultation
  • Outpatient Benign Hematology
  • Hematopathology
  • Laboratory Medicine: Including Coagulation, Transfusion Medicine, Cell Therapy 
  • Elective (4 weeks in year 1, 8 weeks in year 2)

Year 3

In the third year, fellows spend the majority of their time on mentored scholarly activity. This may include projects in clinical research, health services research, translational or laboratory-based research, community engagement and outreach, medical education, or other initiatives tailored to the individual fellow’s career objectives. 

Continuity Clinic: Fellows will embed in mentored continuity clinics lasting 6–12 months throughout their training. 

Didactic Program

  • Year 1, Foundations of Hematologic and Oncologic Care: The first-year didactic program is dedicated to core lectures providing a broad base of knowledge of hematologic and oncologic diseases and subjects essential to the care of patients with these diseases.
  • Year 2, Foundations of Scholarship: The second year signals a shift to scholarly activity, with didactics consisting of formal presentations in investigational methods alongside team-taught journal clubs covering clinically oriented and basic science research.
  • Year 3, Modeling Professionalism: In the final year of training, fellows anticipate their shift to independent practice and the role of the lifelong educator and learner. In lieu of formal didactic presentations, third-year fellows will prepare review courses for their junior co-fellows in preparation for their in-training examinations.
  • Three-Year Curricula: In addition, throughout their training, fellows will participate in longitudinal curricula in social determinants of health and communication in cancer care, as well as an annual medical writing workshop series.
