Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT)

Intensity-Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is the most common type of external beam radiation therapy utilized. With IMRT, patients can receive higher doses of radiation therapy with minimal radiation to nearby healthy organs and tissues.

Who is a Candidate for IMRT?

With IMRT, we can treat tumors that we couldn’t treat before because of their close proximity to vital organs. Patients with brain tumors, breast cancer, gynecological cancer, head and neck cancer, lung cancer, prostate cancer and others may be able to take advantage of this therapy.

What to Expect

After consulting with a radiation oncologist to determine your treatment plan, the next step is a CT scan, targeting the area of radiation treatment.

Body positioning is very important during radiation therapy. Our specialists will utilize an immobilization device to ensure you are comfortable and in the optimal position during treatment.

For tumors located in areas of the body where they tend to move during treatment, such as in the lung or gastrointestinal tract, a 4D CT scan may also be needed. The information from the 4D CT scan allows our radiation oncologists to design more precise treatments and reduce risk of side effects
