Children’s General Surgery
Expert Surgical Care for Your Child
Trusting your child to a surgeon’s care isn’t easy, but it helps when you know they’re in expert hands. Whether it’s surgery for a common condition like appendicitis or hernia, or something complex like a congenital anomaly or a tumor — our highly-skilled pediatric surgeons provide excellent care for kids of all ages.
Children’s general surgery is any surgical procedure that doesn’t involve the bones, brain, or heart. It includes surgeries like gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy), scope tests to see abnormal areas of the esophagus (esophagoscopy), spleen removal (splenectomy) and more. Expecting parents can also make prenatal consults with our pediatric surgeons.
A Collaborative, Family-centered Environment
Our general surgeons do whatever it takes to find the right solution for each child. We hold regular meetings with other pediatric specialists to share ideas for patient cases. Whenever needed, we pull other surgical minds into the treatment conversation to find the best outcome.
Through it all, your child’s safety and health are the top priorities. Our surgeons opt for the least invasive procedure and use pediatric laparoscopic techniques whenever possible. In some cases, the right surgery is no surgery, and that’s OK with us.
It’s true that surgery is often scary for children and stressful for parents. Our hospitals in New Jersey cater to families’ needs through the Child Life Program, which includes:
- Safe, fun playrooms for children and their families
- Medical play to ease fears and clarify misconceptions
- Explanation of a diagnosis, and preparation for tests and procedures in words children can understand
- Creative art therapy, music therapy, and pet therapy
- And more
